From the self-portrait to the selfie is only one way!

The selfie mania is in full swing, social networks such as facebook are completely invaded of them. Selfies are just everywhere. The outstretched arm is released, alone or in a group, at the restaurant or while climbing rocks, the mobile phone is in the hands and, yey! Let’s go with a photo, and so here we are with a magical selfie. Don’t you dare to tell me you have never done a selfie before, because I don’t really believe you. There are different kind of selfies. The ones made by “layman”, in other words the ones that use only their arms, and the professional ones. The latter are the ones that are willing to go beyond the arm and are equipped with selfie stick, nowadays easier to find in shops than bread. Who really wants to exaggerate can buy an action-cam with its wide-angle lens’ framing, perfect quality and the selfie can be snapped everywhere, on the mountains, underwater or in the air. Then, with an unfailing Wi-Fi connection the selfie is ready to be… shared! Yes, what is the value of a selfie if it is not shared and liked on social networks? Here we have the tale of a selfie that is born, it is posted, it is shared and then disappears in an endless vastness of billions of bits constituent other countless selfies. Each person has its personal “selfie level” of addiction. Someone just enjoy a selfie here and there appreciating it as a funny thing. Someone else is completely addicted to a kind of selfie mania. Who doesn’t have a friend that is posting a selfie for each step he does? Someone is so involved in taking a selfie that he is able to fall down a cliff dying in one of the most idiot ways. It could be funny if it was not true. Obviously as a mass phenomenon, the selfie has been highly criticised. Frankly, my personal opinion is that I don’t really see nothing bad in taking selfies. At least “who cares”? A selfie is nothing more than a different name for a self-portrait. It always existed; maybe an art critic can be disappointed reading what I’m writing. Of course, we are not anymore in the 19th century and the selfie can be taken by everyone; but how to deny that a selfie can be a funny moment shared with friends? How to say that it is not good to watch that personal photos, alone or with friends, with a monument or a particular place behind that was taken some months or years before? Come on! A selfie isn’t a big deal. At least you can laugh at some of the many selfies posted that should have never been taken and that, unfortunately, you see while looking through the facebook updates. Wait a second, I take the stick and… click… ups… I did it again: a selfie!

* In the picture you can see a selfie taken while breathing between an underwater photo and the other.
